Hey Hey My My

Neil Young with Crazy Horse kicking live with a traditional version of Hey Hey, My My from the 1979 LP Rust Never Sleeps. This controlled scorch of an anthem is a gutteral reaction to the cold nihilism of the fledgling punk movement then sweeping the land, thanks to seminal bands then storming out of the UK, bands like the Sex Pistols with their frontman Johnny Rotten, memorialized here in the lyrics by Young.

{ Lyrics: Hey Hey My My by Neil Young ]

Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There’s more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.

Out of the blue and into the black
You pay for this, but they give you that
And once you’re gone, you can’t come back
When you’re out of the blue and into the black.

The king is gone but he’s not forgotten
Is this the story of johnny rotten?
It’s better to burn out ’cause rust never sleeps
The king is gone but he’s not forgotten.

Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There’s more to the picture
Than meets the eye.

Like A Hurricane

Neil Young blew me away the first time I heard Like A Hurricane. Working there for months surveying the land for water and sewer trunk lines, I had recently met a young woman from Dublin, GA, and had fallen madly in love with her. But I lived some 160 miles away in Marietta, a NW suburb of Atlanta. She was a bodacious girl who at 22 was finishing up the first of three marriages she would race through by the time she was twenty-five, climbing the ladder of small-town society. I never had a real shot. While she never knew it, this was "our" song, and I rarely ever hear it without thinking of that girl from Laurens County...

A tearjerker in every way.

[ Lyris: Like A Hurricane by Neil Young ]

Once I thought I saw you
    in a crowded hazy bar,
    Dancing on the light
    from star to star.
    Far across the moonbeam
I know that's who you are,
    I saw your brown eyes
    turning once to fire.

    You are like a hurricane
    There's calm in your eye.
    And I'm gettin' blown away
    To somewhere safer
    where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
    I'm getting blown away.

    I am just a dreamer,
but you are just a dream,
    You could have been
    anyone to me.
    Before that moment
    you touched my lips
    That perfect feeling
    when time just slips
    Away between us
    on our foggy trip.

    You are like a hurricane
    There's calm in your eye.
    And I'm gettin' blown away
    To somewhere safer
    where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
    I'm getting blown away.

    You are just a dreamer,
and I am just a dream.
    You could have been
    anyone to me.
    Before that moment
    you touched my lips
    That perfect feeling
    when time just slips
    Away between us
    on our foggy trip.

    You are like a hurricane
    There's calm in your eye.
    And I'm gettin' blown away
    To somewhere safer
    where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
    I'm getting blown away.
